Why are warm climate wines often higher in alcohol content?

Because grapes produce sugars as they ripen, wines from warmer climates will generally contain more sugar and are stronger than those from cooler regions, which tend towards acidity instead. During fermentation, the yeast converts sugar to alcohol so grapes that contain more sugar will naturally create wines with a higher alcohol content.
