Holiday Sangria?  Yes, Please!

With the holidays already here, there is no better time to celebrate the winter season than with Holiday Sangria.  Made with red wine, fresh fruit and Brandy – this holiday sangria recipe will have them begging for a second or third glass.

One of the things I love most about this simple sangria recipe is just how versatile it is to make.  You can easily adjusts the sangria ingredients according to the season or your different tastes. For example, I add fresh cranberries and cinnamon sticks which makes this the perfect recipe for Christmas and New Years.

What is the best wine to use for sangria?

There are a ton of terrific red and white wines you can use but my favorite is Cabernet Sauvignon.  Other recommended wines for red wine sangria are Grenache, Merlot, Tempranillo, Pinot Noir and Zinfandel. For a white sangria try a dry crisp white wine such as an un oaked Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon Blanc or Riesling. My general rule of thumb when making this sangria is to only use wine that you would enjoy drinking on its own and I’m confident that you will enjoy your sangria

What are the best fruits to use in sangria?

What I love about sangria is all of the different combinations of fruit you can add to the recipe.

For this recipe, I chose to use orange slices, fresh cranberries and lime slices.

Here are a few of my other favorite fruits to add in:

  • Apple Slices

  • Pears

  • Raspberries

  • Cherries

  • Blueberries

  • Peaches

  • Pineapple

  • Pomegranate Arils

Mix it up and have fun.

How should I serve sangria?

Holiday Sangria is one of my favorite cocktails to make for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner and of course Christmas and New Year’s parties.  For larger gatherings I suggest serving your sangria in a punch bowl or a pitcher for a smaller crowd.  I however, like to keep mine cold and drink it all day, so I put mine in a punch dispenser in the refrigerator.

How long does sangria last in the refrigerator?

This festive drink will keep in the refrigerator for three to four days before it starts to turn.  You can also freeze your sangria for up to 3 months.

Ingredients for Holiday Sangria:

  • 1 Bottle Cabernet Sauvignon or your favorite red wine

  • 1 Cup orange juice

  • 1 Cup apple juice or cider

  • 1 Cup cranberry juice

  • 2-4 Cinnamon sticks

  • 2 Oranges, sliced

  • 1 Cup fresh or frozen cranberries

  • 1 Lime, sliced

  • Rosemary sprigs

  • ½ Cup Brandy

  • ¼ Cup sugar (optional)

How to make the Ultimate Holiday Sangria:

  1. Combine bottle of wine, orange juice, apple juice or cider, cranberry juice, cranberries, orange slices, lime slices and cinnamon sticks in a large pitcher or punch bowl.

  2. Stir to combine and refrigerate for 2-4 hours before serving.

  3. When ready to serve, remove from refrigerator and serve in festive glasses.  Garnish with additional rosemary sprigs and fresh fruit slices.

Happy Holidays!
