Malbec – flavors and pairing thoughts

Malbec  is a purple grape variety used in making red wine. The grapes tend to have an inky dark color and robust tannins, and are known as one of the six grapes allowed in the blend of red Bordeaux wine. Almost from the first harvests, Washington grape growers and winemakers discovered that Malbec could yield stunning results. A typical Malbec  is fruit-forward with flavors of dark purple fruit akin to blueberry and huckleberry, joined a tobacco spiciness and cherry pie. Malbecs are best paired with spicy food, red meats or lamb but their secret fabulous pairing is mushroom sauces or strong cheeses. Yumm!
